West Hills College Student Receives Scholarship at
California Workforce Association’s Eighth Annual Youth Conference
Laura Montano, a West Hills College Coalinga student, was one of five students who received the Dwight Brydie scholarship at the California Workforce Association’s (CWA’s) Eighth Annual Youth Conference earlier this month.
The $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Montano and other recipients during a conference in Long Beach. The scholarship was established by the Youth Development & Research Fund, Inc. in honor of Dwight Brydie, a longstanding advocate of reaching the youth.
Applications for the Dwight Brydie scholarship were submitted by students across the state. Montano was the only student in Fresno County to receive the scholarship.
Montano was also recently featured in the January 2008 issue of Dialogue, a bi-monthly publication by West Hills Community College District. She is an All Youth-One System participant, a program offered by West Hills College Coalinga and designed by the Fresno Workforce Development Board.
All Youth-One System serves students ages 14-21 and provides them with services such as tutoring, alternative secondary school services, summer employment opportunities, occupational skills training, leadership development opportunities, mentoring and comprehensive guidance and counseling.
Montano’s future educational plans include graduating from West Hills College Coalinga and transferring to Fresno Pacific University to study children’s physical therapy.
