New Short Term Classes Offered at West Hills College
Native Americans, their history and culture will be the topics of study for a new West Hills College Lemoore course that will start Tuesday, March 25, 2008.
Ethnic Studies 36 focuses on the historical experience of Native Americans. The class presents a range of contemporary American Indian social issues, including trial sovereignty and politics, assimilation policies, cultural genocide, internal colonialism, religion, health issues, environmental problems, mass media, education, gender issues, American Indian activism and economic remedy initiatives.
The class structure is very similar to Black Studies and Latino Studies. All three courses deal with issues of cultural diversity from a historical perspective.
Dr. Kyalo Mativo will be teaching Ethnic Studies 36. “The class will be very interesting,” said Mativo. “I plan on taking those enrolled in the class on field trips to places that are historically significant to Native Americans.”
