Honor a Hero, Hire a Vet Job and Resource Fair at West Hills College Lemoore

West Hills College Lemoore is getting ready to host, for the first time, a job fair that will feature more than 100 employers who are looking to interview and hire post war veterans. The job fair is open to the public and scheduled for Thursday, May 1, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the West Hills College Lemoore Conference Center.

“Post War Veterans will be able to print resumes, meet with local employers, fill out applications, interview for open positions, network with fellow veterans and learn about the Governor’s Troops to College Initiative, said Susie Briones, academic advisor to veterans at West Hills College Lemoore.

A presentation on the Governor’s Troops to College Initiative will be given. The initiative includes the expansion of the California’s public university and college outreach opportunities for returning veterans and active duty military personnel, which increases career opportunities for veterans and active duty military.

The California Department of Veteran Affairs, the California Employment Development Department and the California Labor & Workforce Development Agency have partnered to hold 12 job and resource fairs in communities across the state that will target recent returning veterans.

West Hills College Lemoore is one of the 12 locations. The resource fairs, Honor a Hero, Hire a Vet, will not only be a resource for veterans to meet hiring employers but will also introduce veterans to federal, state, local and non-profit programs and services available to assist their transition into civilian life. There will also be representatives present to provide information on the Montgomery GI Bill.

West Hills College Lemoore Counseling department provides Veteran services to both post war veterans, through the GI Bill and Active Military through the Tuition Assistance program as well.

West Hills College Lemoore is also in a new partnership with the Fresno Workforce Investment Board that will provide services to Lemoore Naval Air Station veterans who are seeking short-term training vocational programs such as the psychiatric technician program. Other vocational program can be a correctional officer or state hospital police, just to name a few. This project will work closely with the Coalinga One Stop that directs unemployed adults to career opportunities and provides them supportive services. It is a $100,000 grant to be spent over the next two years.
