Sandy Cavins (left) will end a 40-year career with West Hills Community College District when she retires on June 30th. She was honored at a retirement party at West Hills College Coalinga on Friday. Pictured with her is co-worker Jean Schawe, who joined the district as a student worker in 1971. Between the two is a picture taken in 1983 when they attended a retirement party in 1983 for the late Bob Annand, who was president of WHCC from 1968-1982.
Sandy Cavins will retire June 30th after 40 years at West Hills College
When Sandy Cavins was a student at Coalinga High School, there was an ad in the high school newspaper that said you could earn half a million dollars if you went to West Hills College Coalinga and got a business degree.
“I was blown away by that ad,” Sandy says, and so when she graduated from Coalinga High in 1968 she enrolled in classes at WHCC the next fall. She started working for the district the following spring (1969) as a student worker. After her graduation in 1970 with an associate degree in business, she went to work full time for the district.
On June 30th, she will retire as the district’s longest-serving full-time employee with more than 40 years under her belt. She was honored Friday night at a retirement party at West Hills College Coalinga.
Sandy, who has never had a paycheck from anyplace but West Hills, started her career in the college records office, moved to the switchboard and admissions office, then went to work in the business office before she helped open the district’s office at Naval Air Station Lemoore in 1972. Next she served as veterans’ coordinator for the district and then counseling secretary in Coalinga. From there she moved back to the business office where she will finish her career as accounting services supervisor.
During her time with the district, West Hills has grown from serving less than 1,000 students a semester to serving over 7,000 this semester. The district grew to include the communities of Firebaugh, Mendota, San Joaquin, Tranquillity and Lemoore. In 1971, she was around from the opening of North District Center, Firebaugh and in 2002, she was at opening ceremonies for West Hills College Lemoore.
While Sandy has no specific retirement plans, you will probably continue to catch her at WHCC football and basketball games where she has been a regular for more than 40 years.
