Rural Communities Outreach - Building Pathways to Student Success
West Hills College has a long history of educational, economic, civic and cultural commitments to the communities located throughout our district. From degree and certificate programs to municipal improvements and social and civic group enrichment, West Hills Community College District makes its presence felt in more than a dozen towns and cities in the San Joaquin Valley. Here’s a partial list of collaborations that have enriched the lives of residents in our 3,400 square mile district.
Central California Community Colleges Committed to Change (C6) Consortium
Central California Community Colleges Committed to Change Consortium (C6) is a regional, Valley-wide effort to improve and promote systemic transformation and community college capacity-building to meet industry needs while accelerating learning and improving retention and completion rates.
District High Schools
West Hills College enjoys a partnership with all district high schools to provide youth services.
Public Notice: West Hills College District to Apply for After School Funds
West Hills Community College District is pleased to announce their intent to apply for the California Department of Education’s 21st Century After School Safety and Enrichment Programs for Teens in collaboration with Laton High School, Dos Palos High School and Chowchilla High School. We are looking forward to working with these high schools and the communities to provide an essential After School Program. The after school program will provide tutorial services, enrichment activities, and additional opportunities that will enhance the high school experience. Parents will also have access to workshops which will provide them with information on how to help their child succeed in school and apply for college.
Local Elementary Schools
Our partnership with local elementary schools aims to assist in a tutor preparation program that trains WHC students to be tutors for the elementary school systems.
Business Community
We have business and industry partnerships with The Palace Indian Gaming Center – training customer service representatives and with Wills Trucking for truck driving classes. We have a Farm of the Future Advisory Board that consist of some of the most prominent businessmen on the West Side.
California State University, Fresno
With an emphasis on teacher/tutor training West Hills College has made an agreement with CSUF to broadcast classes to both the Coalinga and Lemoore campuses. Students can earn their bachelor's degree or teaching credential without leaving West Fresno County. Department of Human Services, Kings County
Kings County Department of Human Services supports a program for careers in the culinary arts. We’re going to prepare meals for diabetic senior citizens and prepare students for a career in food service.
Fresno Workforce Investment Board and Department of Human Service, Fresno County
Fresno Workforce Investment Board and the Fresno County Department of Human Services are funding special projects in the rural areas such as the new day care center in Firebaugh, and traveling childhood education classes that lead to a certificate. The Youth Services Program provides enrichment activities for rural youth as well as opportunities for leadership, pre employment preparation, and work experience opportunities.
I-5 Business Development Corridor
Our partnership with the I-5 Business Development Corridor consists of working with the youth in their area on job preparation and job placement.
Regional Consortium for Psychiatric Technician Training Program
Leading a regional consortium of health care trainers, we're developing a range of health career programs that includes obtaining licenses for CNA, LVN, Psychiatric Technician, and In-Home Health Care Provider. Ten partners, with a regional span from Merced to Hanford and Clovis to Coalinga, include the Community Colleges, Adult Schools, and Regional Occupational Programs.
The program trains for careers at residential care facilities and state mental health hospitals throughout the Central San Joaquin Valley to provide health care staff for their organizations.
