Michelle Mora's story is about resilience, determination, and triumph over adversity. As a single mother working as an LVN at the Health Department in Hanford, her journey towards becoming a registered nurse is nothing short of inspiring.
Born into a family of eight siblings, Mora's upbringing was shaped by the sacrifices of her mother, an immigrant from Mexico, who toiled in the fields to provide for her children. Facing financial challenges, Mora's older brother dropped out of high school to work alongside their mother, while another brother succumbed to the harsh realities of gang life, leading to imprisonment.
Motivated by a desire to break the cycle of hardship, Mora promised her older brother that she would make something meaningful of her life.
Despite navigating a challenging divorce and custody battle, she became an LVN to support her kids. She soon realized she could offer even more by becoming a registered nurse.
Mora's transformative journey took a pivotal turn when she enrolled in Lemoore College's nursing program. Here, she found a path to professional growth and a supportive community that became her second family. The college's flexible class schedules, offering both online and evening sessions, allowed Mora to balance her responsibilities seamlessly.
One obstacle Mora faced was her partial deafness, a source of embarrassment. Fortunately, the college's Nursing Director, Kathryn DeFede, guided her to the Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) program. With DeFede's assistance, Mora secured grant money for hearing aids, enabling her to grasp medically technical terms crucial for her exams and future nursing career.
"Being at Lemoore College was transformative for me. The supportive environment and flexible classes allowed me to pursue my dream while managing my responsibilities as a single mother. Kathryn and the college staff played a crucial role in my success," shared Mora.
Lemoore College became a beacon of support for Mora, offering academic guidance and a nurturing environment. The dedicated staff and instructors were crucial to her success, providing encouragement and mentorship throughout her educational journey.

Now, Mora stands proudly as an infectious disease nurse at Adventist Health in Hanford. Her story exemplifies the transformative power of education and the unwavering spirit needed to overcome challenges.
