West Hills Community College District, including Coalinga College and Lemoore College, will participate in the Great California ShakeOut on Thursday, Oct. 15, joining schools, businesses, government agencies and communities across California in an annual earthquake preparedness drill.
At 10:15 a.m., students, faculty and staff across the district will participate in the drill and practice the recommended earthquake safety response: “Drop, Cover and Hold On.”
The Great California ShakeOut is designed to help individuals and organizations prepare for earthquakes and practice how to respond quickly and safely when shaking begins. The annual exercise also provides organizations with an opportunity to review emergency procedures and reinforce the importance of preparedness before an emergency occurs.
“Keeping our students and employees safe is one of our highest priorities across West Hills Community College District,” said Dr. Robert Pimentel, West Hills Community College District chancellor. “The Great California ShakeOut gives our campus communities an important opportunity to practice how we would respond during an earthquake. Being prepared and knowing what to do in an emergency can make a significant difference when every second matters.”
During the drill, participants will practice dropping to the ground, taking cover under a sturdy desk or table when possible, protecting their head and neck, and holding on until the shaking stops.
The district’s participation in the Great California ShakeOut is part of its ongoing commitment to maintaining safe and prepared learning and working environments at Coalinga College, Lemoore College and throughout the district.
The Great California ShakeOut is held annually in October and provides an opportunity for millions of people to practice earthquake safety and review their emergency preparedness plans.
