Public health professionals work to keep people and communities safe and healthy by reducing harm. While public health is not a typical “health” degree like nursing or pre-medicine, public health professionals examine potential issues impacting communities. Through this, they develop prevention programming to improve health while also enhancing the quality of life.
The public health degree exposes the student to a multi-dimensional approach to personal and community health by incorporating the study of social, behavioral and physiological sciences. Students will learn about individual and sociocultural risk factors for disease and disability known as social of determinants of health and be taught behavior-changing skills and public health promotion strategies to improve quality and quantity of life, all of which have broad applications in fields of public health education such as academic, community, corporate, government, and/or medical. The course of study also provides a broad foundation in public health for those students who want to pursue specialized occupations in the public health profession.
