Coalinga College was honored by The Campaign for College Opportunity as a 2024 Champion for Excellence in Placement, receiving the prestigious Latinx Math Success award. This accolade recognizes colleges that have achieved exceptional results in ensuring Latinx students complete transfer-level math within their first year, setting a benchmark for closing racial equity gaps in education.
"We are deeply honored by this recognition from The Campaign for College Opportunity," said Dr. Carla Tweed, President of Coalinga College. "This award is a testament to our dedicated faculty and staff who work tirelessly to support student success, particularly for our Latinx community. Their commitment to equity and excellence is truly inspiring."
The Latinx Math Success Award is presented to institutions with a transfer-level math completion rate above 65% among Latinx students within their initial year. This achievement reflects Coalinga College's proactive approach and commitment to creating equitable educational opportunities.
Since the passage of California's AB 705 in 2017, community colleges have made significant strides in student success for transfer-level courses. Coalinga College's leadership in these efforts exemplifies the positive impact of implementing equity-focused educational strategies.
Coalinga College was celebrated in a special Instagram Live event, "Excellence in Placement: Honoring Community Colleges Excelling in Equitable Course Placement for Students," hosted by The Campaign for College Opportunity on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
