Administration of Justice - Correctional Science

Correctional Science AS or AA Degree

The Administration of Justice Correctional Science degree is designed to provide the student with option of emphasizing their program of study in the correctional science field. This program provides introductory and journey level course work in corrections for local, state, federal and private levels of correctional enterprise levels. This program enhances student development with philosophical, statutory, and practical background necessary to successfully compete in a technologically advance competitive, and rewarding career field. The following have been recognized as core course requirements by the Commission on Correctional Peace Officers Standards and Training (STC) for all new apprentices (entry-level) hired with the Department of Corrections and Department of Youth Authority after July 1, 1995.

Upon completion of the program the student will be able to meet the following objectives:

  • The students will be able to write correct documents used in corrections using proper format and citations. This includes reports, memos, and legal briefs.
  • The students will be able to explain the basic rights afforded persons who are under the authority of the correctional system.
  • The student will be able to track the appeals process of a convicted offender through the state and federal court system.
  • The students will be able to explain the requirements and responsibilities of those who are employed in the correctional system.

Students must fulfill the following requirements to qualify for an associate degree:

  • Complete the Associate Degree requirements
  • Complete a minimum of 18 additional units from the major list below
  • Complete electives to reach a total of 60 degree applicable units
  • Earn a grade of C or better in each major course
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.00
  • Complete the English and math proficiency requirements with a C or better
